Animation is a lengthy process – the team of 10 strives to animate 30 seconds a day! It is no wonder then that the animation for Systraat started in March 2015 and the thirteen 24 minute episodes should be completed by the end of November 2015!
Carl Stemmet wrote all of the scripts first and then the animatics were drawn by Andile Radebe. The animatics, the black and white images/puppets, are the blueprint sketches for the animation and shows the animators what movements the characters make as well as the timing of the movements.
Andile draws and times all of the animatics and then Carl edits the animatics to get the right pace for the episodes.
Rigging & layouts: this is where the characters, props and backgrounds are built.
Compositing: all the characters and backgrounds are placed together per scene so that it can be sent to the key animators to animate.
Key animation: all the characters get animated from the animatics (the black & white image on the right hand side of the screen).
The key animators:
Clean-up: after the scenes have been animated they go through final checks and fixes as well as final lip-syncing.
